Ultrasound (also called sonography or ultrasonography), uses high-frequency sound waves and a computer to create images of blood vessels, tissues, and organs. The sound waves bounce off body parts and send back an image, like sonar on a submarine. A computer then looks at the signals sent back by the sound waves and creates an image of the body using those signals.

Ultrasounds are used to view internal organs as they function, and to assess blood blow through various vessels. Ultrasound procedures are often used to examine many parts of the body such as the abdomen, breasts, female pelvis, prostate, scrotum, thyroid and parathyroid, and the vascular system. It is a noninvasive imaging test that shows structures inside your body using high-intensity sound waves.  Ultrasound probes, called transducers, produce sound waves that have frequencies above the threshold of human hearing (above 20KHz), but most transducers in current use operate at much higher frequencies (in the megahertz (MHz) range). Healthcare providers use ultrasound exams for several purposes, including during pregnancy, for diagnosing conditions and for image guidance during certain procedures. Ultrasound enables healthcare providers to “see” details of soft tissues inside your body without making any incisions (cuts). And unlike X-rays, ultrasound doesn’t use radiation.

Color Doppler ultrasound scanners can detect and measure the movement of red blood cells as they cause a change in pitch of the reflected sound waves which is also known as the Doppler effect. They use standard ultrasound methods to produce a picture of a blood vessel and the computer converts the Doppler sounds into colors that are overlaid on the image of the blood vessel that represents the speed and direction of blood flow to the vessel. The frames of each picture marks blood location and the rate of the frame determines the speed.

3D ULTRASOUND AND A 4D ULTRASOUND.              Three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound allows the visualization of some facial features of the fetus and possibly other body parts such as fingers and toes. Four-dimensional (4D) ultrasound is 3D ultrasound in motion. Providers rarely use 3D or 4D fetal ultrasound imaging for medical purposes, though it can be useful in diagnosing a facial or skeletal issue. They do, however, use 3D ultrasound for other medical purposes, such as evaluating uterine polyps and fibroids.
